How to fake the Ombre hair trend

It seems like having Ombre hair is all the rage now.  With celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, and Jessica Biel sporting the gradient hairstyle.  However as you can probably tell, this is no dye job. In fact it is the lack of a dye job.  This is what happens when I go 6+ months without dying/high-lighting my hair.

And as much as I wish this was a good look on me because of the zero upkeep... it think it looks like ugly re-growth.  I just can't pull it off like those beautiful Hollywood starlets.

Soooo... right now I am contemplating what I actually want to do to my hair.  Should I just do high-lights like I have been doing for the past couple of years?  Or should I bleach it out like I had in this picture circa. 2009?

Or, there is always the option of going to the dark side like I did in 2008.

Although according to my husband the dark is a no-go because it just didn't "look like me".  This is about the only picture of it dark that I have because I just never felt like putting on makeup or getting ready when it was brown.  Being pregnant with Keegan and feeling 'blah' all the time probably had a lot to do with it.  But, I have to agree with him that it just didn't feel like me.

So, what's a girl to do?  My sister Rebecca thinks I should chop it up to my collar bone.  But the thought of cutting my hair scares the crap out of me!  I have had long hair since 6th grade when I cut it up to my chin.  Believe me, it wasn't pretty.  I won't even provide photographic proof because of how horrible I looked. haha

I could use some feedback on what to do because as you can see, I'm totally lost.  I'm not sure if I want to do something subtle or drastic.  Anyways, enough of my ramblings.  I guess I'll go scour Pinterest and see if I can find the perfect cut and color!

  1. Do NOT cut your hair. It's fun for a minute but it takes forever to get it back once you chop it off. I really liked it how you had it back in school with the more natural color with the highlights. That's just me. :) I really like the brown on you though too. I think for me I have just outgrown the straight blonde. I would feel like I was a teenager again if I was to go back to straight bleach blonde. Only you know what you would feel most comfortable with, don't let anyone tell you what is best! You are gorgeous no matter what you do! Also, I am going to go "Bronde" the next time I get my hair done. You could check that out.. Love you!

  2. I have been talking about what I want to do with my hair almost every day with Kevin, I'm pretty sure he's sick of hearing me talk about cutting it, highlighting it, or going brown again. I got bored with brown quickly but you do look pretty with brown hair.

I say you should get lowlights and highlights. And don't cut length but get it shaped.

Also, I'm amused that there is now the word ombre that is all the rage. When I was in high school no hairstylist I went to knew how to do my hair when I asked for it to fade to a different color from roots to ends

  3. Thanks for the input guys, and I like the idea of lowlights and highlights together alot. I was just thinking if I had layers put in instead of cutting off length I would feel a lot more comfortable.

Pamela I have to agree that this new word "ombre" is pretty funny as to how popular it is getting. lol You must have been a trendsetter to want your hair done like that back then!

  7. I know you don't know me from Larry, but I stumbled on your blog from pinterest and saw this post. I totally think the brown is a million times more flattering. It really suits you in that pic, looks warm and works well with your skin tones.

  9. I just stumbled on this blog as well as Oscarlet. I like both hair colors, but the brown really does flatter your complexion. I know you have already highlighted, which is also very pretty. But maybe when the roots come out again, try brown again. It seems more natural and pretty.

  10. Just found your blog for the hardware on the garage post - but wanted to say (in my opinion) you hair looks a million times better brown. You look more natural, your eyes stand out, friendlier even.
