Garage Door Makeover

This was a super easy project that literally took like 15 minutes from start to finish.  In my opinion it adds more character and curb appeal to the house.

As we were shopping in Home Depot for a new furnace filter we ran across this awesome product.  I always wanted Carriage Style garage doors but it wasn't an option with the program we built with.  I always thought it would be a down-the-road upgrade we would have to save our pennies for.  Little did I know it was an easy project that would only take a few minutes and a few dollars!

This hardware kit was on sale at The Home Depot for only $6.99.  Seriously?! It costs about the same as a combo meal at a fast food restaurant.  Definitely affordable.  How could we pass it up?

Step One:
Place and measure where you want to situate the brackets, making sure they line up on both sides and are level.

Step Two:
Drill the screws in the brackets in the designated holes.

Step Three:
Figure out where you want your handles situated.  There are a few different options, whether you want them closer together or farther apart.  Make sure they are level, then mark where you need to pre-drill the holes.

Step Four:
Pre-drill where you marked the holes, put on the handles, then insert the bolts.

Step Five:
Put the bracket in the bolts on the inside of the garage door, then tighten the nut around the bolt.

That's it!
I think it made a pretty big difference.

  7. When buying a garage door you have a number of options to choose from. Which one you select will depend greatly on what size of garage and driveway you have along with how much you want to spend.

  8. Yes but how do you put the windows in? LOL.

  9. nygatesus- I built my home with a low to moderate income program, so I only had the option of a long or short panel garage door to keep costs low and the home affordable. If I were to hire a contractor I'm sure that I would have much more options.

Polly & Matt McDonald- I wish I knew! Windows would most definitely finish off the look I'm going for.

  13. For the windows, do what I did---on each of the panels of the top row, measure out the center of each panel, taking into account the width of your painters' tape. (If panel is 18" wide and you are using 1" tape, then 18-1=17" half of 17" is 8.5 inches, so measure over 8.5" from edge of panel and place your tape vertically.) Tape all of the other edges of each panel, then paint your "new" panel blocks black. Let dry, and voila! "Windows" for your garage door. You can look up "Nate Berkus faux garage door windows" online and see how great they look. Also, to prevent paint bleed-thru, paint over the edges of your painters tape with the original color of your door, your case, white (just paint where you are going to paint black, not over every single edge of tape). After the white paint dries, paint your "windows" on--the edges of the tape will be sealed by the white paint and the white paint (which matches your garage door) will be the paint that bled under the tape edge.

  22. Hello,

I’m writing on behalf of the visual editor for HouseLogic.com to request your permission to use one of your photos on the site. The photo nicely illustrates a topic we’re writing about. HouseLogic, published by the National Association of Realtors®, covers home ownership-related topics.

Specifically, we’d like your permission to use the garage door image in connection with the slideshow about cost vs value home improvements. The image may also appear as a link back to that slideshow in such places as our email newsletter; social media, including Pinterest; marketing; companion site for REALTORS®; and website home page. The use may require that we resize the image to fit the size constraints of our website.

We’re asking you to grant the National Association the non-exclusive, royalty-free right to use the image as described above for as long as the topic is included on the HouseLogic site. We would include a credit to you in the caption accompanying the image in its primary location on HouseLogic. If you would like we could also link that credit to your website.

If you approve, please respond to this email confirming that you own the image rights, have the authority to grant to the National Association permission to use the image as described, and grant that permission. Please also let us know how you would prefer to be named in the credit. My deadline is Friday, Jan. 11 and I would need a response from you before then, if possible.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

  23. Aside from being cheap and very effective in improving how the garage doors look, this idea is actually very easy to execute. All you need, aside from the parts that come from the package, is an electric drill, a meter, and a level.

  25. I love this idea and you'll never believe what I found - on Amazon.com the have the "faux windows" to create the look we're all going for - that beautiful carriage style! It's a bit pricey but from the reviews, it's a good, American made product!

I'm definitely getting the hardware at Home Depot tomorrow and I'll think on the plexiglass windows for a while... I'd need 2 sets for my double garage door.

    Great post!

  28. I can’t believe that a simple decoration or hardware can create a beautiful enhancement to your garage door. In just a quick installment, you now have an elegant and stylish front garage. I love it! I would definitely persuade my father to try this on his garage door!

    1. I was concerned with that a little at first too, but they did not interfere at all with the way the garage door opened. There was more than enough clearance. Hope that helps!

  35. What a great idea. I have to show this to the man of the house for his thoughts. I did have to chuckle at the photo of your husband in front of the garage door working. See, I thought my husband was the only man who ended up with major baggy pants in the middle of home improvement projects. I guess not.

    1. I like to tease him that he is reverting back to his teenage baggy pants days! haha. His problem is that his "working" Dickies pants were his brothers originally who is a couple sizes bigger. I just have to remind him to wear his belt when he wears them. lol

  55. If your garage door has visibly clean lines it then gives a good appearance to your garage door. Painting the garage door with bright colors like yellow also gives it a nice little makeover. Before installing security doors in your home, you should first thoroughly verify the outer structure of your home.
